Land trusts no longer "just for environmentalists"

There's been a dramatic increase in private lands protected through legal agreements with land trusts according to a December 1 article by Bettina Boxall in the LA Times. She writes that "the number of land trusts in California increased by 50% in the last five years." It's a trend fueled by tax incentives, bond money made available for the purpose and the wave of development washing over rural areas of the state.

Saving The Sierra covered the use of conservation easements in preserving the Sierra Valley, north of Truckee, in the first part of our rural Sierra series, which was broadcast on The California Report November 10. You can hear the story on the Radio page of our website. Click "Saving the Ranching Way of Life ."

I think it is fantastic that

I think it is fantastic that there are actually legal agreements that protect private lands. We are so consumed with tearing down and building on land, that we fail to stop and think about the importance of preserving it. I would love to see more Bills passed that would allow for the protection of our valuable land. Farrah Amin- Sac State Student
