SMUD Dams on American River Face Changes

According to the Sacramento Bee's article, SMUD dams face changes , the U.S. Forest Service is demanding major changes at American River dams owned by the Sacramento Municipal Utility District, changes that could improve one of the Sierra Nevada's most popular recreation areas - the South Fork American River.

This FERC (Federal Energy Regulatory Commission) dam relicensing process is one of the most complex and contentious in the nation. The area being regulated spans 10 reservoirs across a vast mountain ecosystem on the upper American River.

Forest Service changes will be mean less power generating capacity for SMUD and open more whitewater boating opportunities.

Friday is a deadline to reach settlement or the FERC process takes over and both parties may lose something they have been fighting for.

Any changes to our dams will

Any changes to our dams will be a plus. Sacramento currently has the WORST hurricane protection in the US, with only a 100 year plan. To put that into perspective, New Orleans had an over 200 year plan.
